Joe McElderry fails to make Xmas number 1

Ever since the first X Factor champion, Steve Brookstein, every X Factor winner, even Leon Jackson, has made the Xmas number 1 slot – but not this year.

As we reported earlier in the week, Joe faced a backlash against X Factor, with a Facebook-led campaign to take Rage Against the Machine’s Killing in the Name to the top of the charts for Christmas.

Simon Cowell commented “I am gutted for Joe because a number one single meant a lot to him but I have to congratulate Jon and Tracy, who started the Facebook campaign.”

Joe could still be number one next week, however, and the X Factor boss urged people to buy The Climb to make Joe’s dream of a number one single a reality.

Rhydian ‘Sabotages’ Leon Performance

In what seems more like a desperate attempt to remain in the public conciousness than a malicious act, Rhydian turned off the lights on a live performance by Leon earlier this week.

Fellow X Factor contestant Niki Evans told the Daily Star: “At the end of his performance Rhydian jumps off the stage and runs around the side to make way for Leon.

“But the other night he happened to run around the wrong way and step on a plug which turned all the bloody electrics off.

“He claims it was an accident but whether it was sabotage or not I don’t know.

Leon holds on to top spot

X Factor 2007 winner Leon Jackson has held on to the number 1 position in the UK singles chart for the third consecutive week, with his single ‘When you Believe’.

Leon became the first number 1 of 2008, holding off strong competition from ‘Crank That’ by Soulja Boy. X Factor 2006 winner Leona Lewis dropped to number 3.
