Louis Walsh: Laura White was ‘never going to win’

Louis Walsh has defended his controversial decision to send Laura White home on Saturday, saying she was ‘never going to win’.

“Laura was in the bottom two – her performance was bad and her styling was even worse”, Louis was quoted as saying in The Sun.

The evicition of Laura White has produced a torrent of comments in defense of her here on X Factor Blog. Questions have even been asked in Parliament, with Culture Secretary, Andy Burnham calling Laura ‘very talented’.

Lilly Allen has also spoken out, saying she felt ‘quite upset’ at the show.

  1. I was disgusted at the results on Saturday. Laura White should never have gone. There where two other contestants that where far worse than Laura and should have been kicked off weeks ago. I will not be watching anymore.

  2. I watch xfactor year after year as my daughter is a singer/entertainer so i like to think ive got some idea about talent. I was actually turned to raers when Laura was voted off last Saturday, the show is being made into a mockery yes i think definately the wrong two was put in the bottom. Either of those girls if voted off should be given a life line to appear again. I also appeal to the public to vote for talent and not for sympathy of their past events, and i’m not saying that i don’t feel for whats happened, but its a talent show. Also the Judges should not take it out on the artiste if they have a fallen out with each other. This of course is only my opinion, but i feel strong about it, i dont know now if i would like my daughter to audition if all is not fair. Thank you.

  3. Louis Walsh has made a mistake…or it wasnt a maistake? Probably he wants his act JLS to win thats why he keeps sending home all the best “enemys”.Its not a talent show anymore, its became a race between Louis and the other judges.Probably the problem is the system of the x factor. The judges sholuld judge the acts independently, or they shouldnt be judges. If its a singing competition on the first place , then Laura should be in the final without one question…Thank you…:T.

  4. What a load of rubbish, what the hell was Louie thinking? Why is it left for him to have the final vote? Surely it should be taking in turns with the judges to vote off acts. Louie is either voting off acts that would and will beat his boy band or he is trying to be the bad boy. which ever it is crap and after god know how many of voting I will not be doing it again or watch the programme again. Also I think this could be a way to get more people to phone in, if some one says ” I don’t know what the public are doing, get phoning for you favorite. We are losing good acts because no one is phoning for them” that could be the reason for Louis choose!!!!!!!!!

  5. I was absolutely shocked on Saturday that either Ruth or Laura should be in the bottom two but I feel really angry that Laura has been voted off, the girl has a fantastic voice. I can’t help but think that Louis was playing tactics by voting off a strong contendor and I think he should be ashamed of himself.

  6. Mr. Walsh should not have made a statement saying bottom two can never win. This is not good for participate and future of X Factor. These young people determine to do well in their lifes and deserve all chances. Laura white was out is shame but making a staement like this you put a sad belief in the kids in your country as once you fail you can’t achieve your goal no more and your dream is destroyed. Come on… Mr. Walsh… you have responsibility for the future of Britain as well. Think before you said something like that… use statistics carefully…

  7. Wasn’t leon in the last two his first week? Unless Louis means noone in the bottom two wins when he knows the numbers voting for Eggnog and Diana, or when he wants JLS to be in the final.

    Comment by Rab — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 01:38

  8. Oh well, let’s stop bothering with all the remaining shows and just ask Louis Walsh to name the winner since he knows it all. Save everyone a lot of trouble.
Oh - but what was that he kept saying about Same Difference last year…?

  11. I can’t believe Luara got voted off she is a brilliant singer she should be in the bottom 2…
Louis is loosing his touch when it comes to finding good talent lately but he’ll regret that Laura got voted off….

  13. It happens every year. Some rubbish act keeps getting through coz of block voting or sympathy vote. This year it’s Daniel before it was those Scottish brothers. Also how the hell does someone get a bye. Laura is and Ruth are better than Diana but she gets sick and doesn’t face the vote. What a load of tosh. I thought Rachel was out of key and her attitude is grating and I can’t watch Daniel anymore. After IMO two of the potential finalists were put up for the vote I will no longer be watching this farce. Can;t believe the public would vote this way. Surely yet ANOTHER phone voting problem?

    Comment by Bluto — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 10:08

  14. The only reason that laura was ‘never going to win’ is because louis wasnt gunna let her!! Of course his talentless act will win if he cuts phone lines and votes out everyone who has got a chance of winning!

    Comment by Nicole Tierney — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 11:10

  15. We are both outraged at the farce that this has become. After Laura being voted out on Sunday what is evident is that the only people who stand a chance to win are who the people behind the scenes want to win. It’s got nothing to do with talent and popularity. It’s all about money. Making money by getting people to phone in and vote, and who they can make the most money out of in the end. I mean who is to say that Laura and Ruth were the bottom two? Who ever gets to see the numbers and how many times have we heard about phone lines being fixed in competitions like this. We have ’seen the light’ and will no longer be taken in by the farce and will not longer be watching.

    Comment by Dianne & Richard — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 14:17

  16. Laura was voted off because she was the poorest in the sing off. Ruth was awesome singing “knocking on heavens door” and I for one would buy that single if she released it. Louis was right to vote her off. She was let down by her survival song choice. It may have been good enough to perhaps beat some of her other rivals in a sing off but not good enough to beat Ruth who put so much passion into that performance.Laura is an excellent singer and it was harsh that she was in the bottom two, but was second best on the night to Ruth. Good call Louis.

    Eoghan to win.

    Comment by pete — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 14:26

  17. Who honestly cares? It was Louis’ decision and based on their final songs, Ruth was a lot better.

No matter how much money they plug in to it, it’s still a reality show.

    Comment by Ted — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 14:30

  18. Mariah Carey Week?????

What a feckin joke, most of the songs were covers written by other fantastic artists; all she did was murder them. To attribute a show to her is farcical….

    Comment by Stuart — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 14:48

  19. The act with the lowest phone votes should go. Or the public are wasting their money voting , the show is based on to much trust as we never know how many votes each act has had good job the judges are not runnhng the general election

  21. If we accept that Diana really had voice problems - what a laugh! doctors said she could damage her voice for life! WHAT VOICE? - then no-one should have been evicted last week, leaving two to go this week. It was simply unfair.
Something stinks this year - Austin should never have been voted out over the appalling Rachel. Either that or the public are playing games as they do on Strictly!

    Comment by Simon Bell — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 15:59

  22. I have been an avid watcher of X Factor since the beginning, but no more. It’s become a farce. Laura and Austen should clearly still be in the competition, instead viewers will have to listen to the likes of Dan Evans and Eoghan perform again in the next round. Diana should have performed on Saturday, she has been filmed screaming and hollering with friends around a bonfire on 5 November, yet next day, she’s pictured in bed (fully made up I might add) poorly. If Ruth can sing with a bad throat infection, then so can Diana, or they’ll all be throwing sickies when they don’t fancy the night’s theme.

    Comment by Yvonne — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 16:27

  23. It is an absolute JOKE. Laura White is by far the strongest singer on the show and I do believe she would have been the most deserved to be in the final. As well as a good voice and being musically skilled, she is beautiful and I can see her now releasing an album, being a role model to girls all around the world. However, Louis is clearly tactically voting. JLS are one of my favourite acts, but at the end of the day, if you vote someone through PURELY because ‘you want to win’ then what is the point in X Factor anymore? It’s a judge’s competition now, not the artists. Public, stop voting for Daniel.

    Comment by Amy — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 16:46

  24. Having been bullied into watching this series of ‘x factor’ I have quite enjoyed it,how ever I was led to believe ‘x factor’ is a talent show, so why has Laura been given the push? out of the two of them Ruth should have gone because she cannot sing in tune and when she has to do a high note she shouts, so ‘come on’ bring her back and return the show to its original format, ‘x Factor’ talent show.S.Loraine

    Comment by sandra loraine — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 18:35

  25. Laura should never have gone. Simon only saved Ruth as he fancies her and Louis voted her off as he was afraid she would win over his group and he knows that Ruth has no chance of winning. He should at least have let it go to the public vote as we’re the ones who buy the C.D’s

  28. With what louie said about Daniel on Saturday 8th November that he won’t win the x factor, influenced the vote by making some people angry, so they voted to keep him in, and in doing so Laura and Ruth got the lowest votes, so I think Louie should’nt make comments like these and because Diane could’nt sing due to a throat infection their should’nt have been a sing off, only the one with the least votes should of gone. I also think the contestants should not say things about their families that can get them symparhy votes, for people should not vote for them because they feel sorry for them, they should be voted on by what their talents are, their singing and not how quet they are.

Laura wasn’t the worst singer on the Xfactor last week, nore was Ruth, I myself think Daniel and the girl who wore a black dress and cried after she sang last Saturday 8th Nov were and I think Diane isn’t as good as the other girls iether. The young irish lad was good too.

    Comment by Pamela Holding — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 20:21

  29. So come on people do the desent thing and vote on what the contestants can do and no more sympathy votes and take no heed of what the judges say, for they are only trying to influence you on who they want you to keep in, vote only on what the contestant can do and that is sing and thats if they can (sing)that is what the xfactor is all about and that is TALENT nothing else.

    For she deserves another chance.

    Comment by Pamela Holding — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 20:37

  30. outrageous…..
Laura White was definetley up to the standadards plus more to win the show. everything about her indicates a winner in the show. Louis us damn right out of order. he should have left it to a deadlock situtation. Diana was very very lucky last saturday. a ‘co-insididence’ more like. it was mariah carey week and she cant do her songs at all. also if she wasnt well, why was she screaming, shouting at the bonfire party shown on saturday. it is her foolishness if she cant sing. she knows that the show is an important thing in her life.
im sure the majority of people would like Laura to return back to the show as Diana has an unfair advantage. Simon-SORT Louis out. the poor guy has no taste for music. he doesnt look that intelligent as well

    Comment by Neil — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 20:57

  31. I don’t watch much TV and I wouldn’t usually watch this type of hyped crud where anyone with a sob story can bank on being voted in, but the quality of contestants made it worthwhile this time around. Watching the silly bickering between the egotistical judges irritates me, add to that the poor decision to eliminate Austin and Laura has proven to me that I was right not to watch the rubbish in the first place - I will go back to an X Factor free saturday evening from now on.

    Comment by Janette — Wednesday, 12 November, 2008 @ 22:32

  32. In my opinion, I dont think Louis walsh made a mistake.
He got it right. It was the British public who got it Totally wrong.
Over 16,000 people have protested against Laura being voted off, but if you check, 3/4 of that population most definitely did not pick up their Fones to vote for laura on the nite causing her to find herself in the Bottom 2.
Yes, everyone believed she was safe, but there you go.

Louis was forced to choose between two very talented ladies. After watching the sing off, I think he made the right choice because laura dint pulled off her very best in the sing off but Ruth Lorenzo did and deserves every chance to remain the competition.

Everyone screaming that Daniel or Rachel should have gone should get a grip on themselves as they did not find themselves in the bottom 2 in the first place (not that they’re the better singers).

If I slept over the two songs in the sing off, I will definitely wake up choosing Ruth over Laura. Go and watch the video again and critically compare the two.

  34. Its only a game

The reason laura was voted out was because the xfactor is only a game show.
only one contestant can win, and thats it.
most of these contestants just want a fast track to fame and fortune, they do not want to put in the hard work involved to make real success in the music business.
laura is a pretty good singer but if laura is really as talented as is being suggested, why doesnt she form a band and do it the hard way.
most of the great bands and performers (including the beatles, stones, led zep) have had to start at the bottom and work their way up.
To be brutally honest the only farce as far as i can see is this hyped up, manufactured rubbish that is being passed off as music since the xfactor started.
it was original and entertaining at first, now it is just insipid.

  35. Loui Walsh should try to think before speaking out like a chicker in pain….i always had the feeling that Louis is too emotional and speak out of emotions and not by linking his brain to the tongue…..on the way round i think Simon is too hard and his ego to big.
In fact apparently someone killed himself ought of the ashame he felt for far to horrible comments Simon did in the front of Mrs Abdul…after a not so brilliant performance….
Guys, they are all the same a part from very very few people in that field…..i believe that LAURA WHITE WAS VERY GOOD….I FELT THE PASSION SHE WAS GIVING IN SINGING AND YES, SHE SHOULD COME BACK AS A SINGER WITH A BIG CONTRACT…I WILL BUY HER CD!!!!

  36. Louis Walsh’s erratic behaviour, tasteless comments and school playground taunting of Simon Cowell has probably ruined the chances of JLS winning X Factor, They are not my favourites but there is no doubt that they are the best group ever to be on the programme. There is no doubt that Walsh has been tactically voting off acts that are the most danger to JLS. This will probably be counter-productive and in the end lose JLS votes.
His comments for voting off Laura do not stand up. Her vocal abilities way outweigh any of those of the JLS members. He said that she could not win the X Factor because she had been in the Bottom Two. It was the second time that Ruth had been in the bottom two. By his criteria he should then have voted out Ruth.
A lot of questions were raised about his conduct in last year’s X Factor. In this series he has completely lost the plot. If Simon Cowell has any sense he will sack him immediately.
I like many many others will no longer be watching X Factor 2008.

  37. I am a huge fan of x factor and was hugely upset over sat eve”s results!!!! There is no way that laura should of been in the bottom 2 let alone be voted off by the judges!!!! Laura was in my view this years winner and i have thought that since the start as i did with leona lewis.Something went seriously wrong on saturday and i really feel laura should be given another chance. I think all the contestants are doing really well and i would love to c Alexandra and Diana in the final 3 along with re enstated Laura, but i do feel it is time the viewers to start voting for the real x factor winner!!!! mel ross surrey

  38. Why’s everyone blaming Louis Walsh? The result would have been the same if Dermot had asked the judges in reverse order. I can’t believe that so many people are so thick they don’t realise that. THREE judges voted to remove Laura - not just Louis, so why all the vitriol directed at him? The public put her in the bottom two; the result might have been the same if it had gone to the public vote; get over it!

    Comment by Rose D — Thursday, 13 November, 2008 @ 15:13

  39. It was fixed louis should have made it go to deadlock and let the public decided cause laura sang over the rainbow brillently. Eoghan ;) alexandra or diana 2 win !!!!! Laura should come back . Louis why didnt u put it 2 deadlock !!! :@ :(

    Comment by Mirriam — Friday, 14 November, 2008 @ 16:35

  41. There is no point in everyone getting so stressed about X Factor.

It has now lost all credibility.

The Panel apart from Simon have no real idea about the art of singing or the music business. Their behaviour is like watching children squabbling in a playground.

Half the acts should never have made the Final Twelve. There is just not enough talent out there at the moment. X Factor should take about a five year rest.

Diana should have exited the competition on Saturday.
If you are unable to compete when required you are out.

The person with the lowest vote should be out. The sing off is ridiculous and probably often results in the person with the second lowest votes going out which is not what the public have voted for. Laura may still have gone but it would prevent the Panel from being able to vote tactically.

Do not get stressed. Follow the example of many of us and do not watch any more of X Factor 2008.

  42. i just wanted to say that louis walsh needs to get a life as laura clearly should not off gone she had so much more to show and i know at least to other people could off gone and they decided to keep one of them all i can say is that the true winner will or already has been voted off and thats not what the competition is suppose to be about talent not sympathy to be honest the program gets worse ive never been so disappointed.

    Comment by kerryanne — Friday, 14 November, 2008 @ 20:17

  43. Louis Walsh must be out of touch of what the public want… surely now, with even parliament talking about his decision, he must be having second thoughts. Laura had real talent, she doesn’t copy previous artists and sing nicely, like most of the other contestants do, including Ruth. She was original, how can someone in Louis’ line of work not see something the rest of the country can? After all, it is the public who decide who is number one in the charts, so how can Louis Walsh have the arrogance to insist he is right and the public are wrong? He should just admit what is obvious to the rest of us; he made a tactical vote to get rid of the competition so his group can get further. I thought X-factor was a talent show, I was wrong, it’s another reality show. I hope Laura’s talent is recognised by someone in the position to help her, she’ll be richer than Louis with talent like that.

    Comment by Jo James — Friday, 14 November, 2008 @ 20:20

  44. The best singer will never win while the public are distracted by sob stories.
If this is a singing competition then present singing to the public not all the sympathy seeking stuff.
And please don’t let’s go back to the ‘come on Wales/Ireland/Lancashire etc’ stuff in urging people to vote for their locallass or lad when it gets to the final few. Stick to encouraging people to vote for the best performer.

    Comment by Theresa — Friday, 14 November, 2008 @ 21:52

  45. Rachel sang the worst, her attitude stinks and how many second chances does she think she deserves! Daniel sang better but he should never have got this far, all the judges except Simon caved in under emotional blackmail because he sang his dead wifes favorite song and he didn’t sing it well..then the following week Cheryl says you should vote for who sang the best!!!
Simon was right about Laura she looked like a toilet doll her styling was appalling.Ruth has passion, Alexandra has a great voice and is fun, Diana is surprising every week, JLS work well together but no-one is outstanding, Eoghan is too young reminds me a bit of Jimmy Osmond, Dan just shouldn’t be there..

    Comment by bob — Friday, 14 November, 2008 @ 23:28

  46. Alexandra was the best act last week, but as you now know x factor seems to make up the rules as the show go’s on. I do believe that Laura and Ruth was not the weakest singers , did she deserve to go ? no but she had to go at some point if all was true about her and Mr producer. As for Diana, well was she ill ? maybe it was the bonfire, i could not understand why you all went to bonfire night knowing that it may damage your voices. That was a very stupid thing for you all to have done being around smoke that night with a big show ahead of you all. Daniel was the smart one. Yes Diana should have been disqualified, if that was a football match or a song contest and if one were ill, lets see if you would be asked to come back next week, i think not. If Diana does leave the show, Laura should not return if she does, I think you should all walk out ! maybe x factor has yet another fix it rule. The show was based on talent, not votes the public will never see. The x factor should be called fiX Factor.

  47. Reality check folks. It’s about a lot more than voice. I don’t suppose anyone remembers the woman with the scraped back hair in the auditions. Well she had a much better voice than Laura but the image clearly didn’t cut it. Laura has image problems too - and now it seems - a bit of an ego problem.
Ruth outsung her by a mile in the sing off. Plus she has loads more charisma. Laura fans - get over it.

    Comment by Chrissy — Saturday, 15 November, 2008 @ 18:57

  48. I was absolutely disgusted that Laura White was voted off last week. The judges have said consistently week after week that she is oustandingly talented whilst feedback on Ruth has been mixed. I have been a loyal and dedicated fan since the show commenced but it has lost complete credibility. Simon has made no secret of the fact that he fancies Ruth and Louis should have put it to the public vote. Had I realised she was at risk, I would have voted for Laura myself. She was one of the primary reasons for tuning in each week. There is no remaining contestant who comes close.

    Comment by Lou — Saturday, 15 November, 2008 @ 21:13

  49. Diana couldn’t help being sick but she should have forfeited her X factor chance. If she had been in a sports elimination event she wouldn’t have been able to carry on. Her quirky, gimmicky voice is an insult to Laura’s talent who should never have lost her place in the competition.

    Comment by rita arnold — Saturday, 15 November, 2008 @ 22:17

  50. It seems this show is fixed, I voted last week for laura several times, was advised the vote could not be taken. Diana and Rachel both sang flat but are still in the compeition.
What is th point of a viewer show which has already decided the whining diana is going to win??????.I knew she would say she was not at her best, she could have read a telephone book page and still got through….
There is little point in voting if it is not registered.
Its the last time i will watch anything like this. ITA dont care as long as we all vote and make them plenty of money.Louis should be taken off the judging panel for evicting Laura… i hope she gets a contract soon… she is brilliant, I would buy her CD

    Comment by Jane Smith — Saturday, 15 November, 2008 @ 22:51

  52. Louis should go as a judge. He got it wrong with Alexandra three years ago, he got it wrong with Laura last week. I really hope that this will be the last X Factor show that he judges. I have absolutely no confidence in his ability to judge this show because he was protecting his own interest (JLS) rather than looking at talent, which is what I thought this show was all about. He should have taken it to a tie break. Maybe he should start judging contestants for Butlins. For his sake I hope he is better at that. I would also like to add that his and Simon’s treatment of Daniel was absolutely disgraceful and unprofessional.

    Comment by Jay — Sunday, 16 November, 2008 @ 03:52

  53. What a load of twaddle the ‘controversy’ about Laura was. She was an average singer so lacking in X Factor that she could never have been favourite to win.

She sang badly at her last appearance - particularly in the sing off - and the audience obviously did not warm to her …

Laura should live with it and - if she has the perseverance and the guts - come back next year like Alex did.

    Comment by Clementina — Sunday, 16 November, 2008 @ 12:25

  54. I totally 100% agree withthe decision Louie Walsh made last week, which is very unusual, cos i hate the bloke, but between the two sing-off’s he was 100% correct, Ruth blew her away, and to be honest i’ve neva heard a more boring version of ’somewhere over the rainbow’ as the one Laura did last week. The public and Laura are out of order pointing the finger at Louie & Ruth, when they really should be looking at themselves. Laura failed to perform up to her usual standard & the public didn’t pick up the phone for her, Louie had a choice between 2 ppl, & he chose the 1 who performed on the night which is absolutely what they should be doing, you have to perform every single week. I feel that every1 should also lay off Rachel as she proved this week why she’s in the competition, in what was a fantastic performance & in fact better than Amy Winehouse’s version. Just because she’s a little rough round the edges, so what? It’s her feisty attitude that makes her so good, GET OFF HER BACK!! She should neva of been in the bottom 2 on Saturday, the ppl who say she can’t sing are either deaf or they’re just persecuting her cos’v her past which is out of order, every1 deserves a second chance in life, and she’s up there just trying to give her and her kids a better life, MORE POWER TO HER!!! Eoghans so lucky he’s got all of Ireland voting for him cos he’s definately the weekest left in the competition now that Daniel’s gone.

  55. ok. So laura was good on previous weeks. But her performance was weak. Listen back to her “piano playing “. And amazingly when she stands up it carries on! Honestly! What a con. No shots of her hands playing . And that’s why. Its Cheryl’s fault.

  56. My husband and I have been watching the X Factor here in Switzerland, and we were bitterly disappointed about the elimination of Laura White. She was clearly one of the most talented singers in the competition. Diana should not have been allowed to skip a week. It gave her an unfair advantage over Laura. Our next best hope is the phenomenal Alexandra but with the way things are going, we wouldn’t be surprised if she gets kicked out too. The public voting system is unfair. Simon makes useful comments. Danny does not. Ever.

  57. i love the X factor, but i was really dissapointed when laura went out. i think dianna is really good and i cant believe that some people hate her. i think that daniel should hnave gone out even though he is a nice person that deserves a chance. I also like alexandra,JLS and Eoghan. i think that one of them will win the competition. Rachels voice suits some songs and her first audition was amazing, but she has gone down hill. i think she deserves a chance and the judges should train her voice a bit more.

I can not stand diana and do not think she should of been given the week off if anything no one should of been voted off. Also Laura was wicked she should not have DIANA OUT!!!

  59. Love the politics and dramas between Louis and that Dannii - there were tears just now on the show!
JLS were so flat and appeared totally not together with poor chemistry. Rachel, average tonight, best was that Alex…..

  60. Laura was by far the best contestant on x factor this year. Louis was completley wrong to send her off. He just did it so that his group had a btter chance of winning. Ruth is very good as well but in that situation with 2 off the best singers in the competition in the finale 2 you would go to deadlock….well any normal person would!

  61. Sad Factor / Z Factor

Is this what we have reached in the world of music and entertainment, a bunch of sad wannabe pop stars with zero talent and the urge to beg for fame? Why don’t you sit down, write your own damn tunes and learn how to play an instrument. Think your own thoughts and follow your own lives. Quit being so pretentious, get a life and live in it!

As for the weekly viewers your lives must be really dull to say that this is good entertainment. I can’t believe people have the money to vote for such rubbish! Big Brother is the same. What a load of contrived wannabe freaks! Was is it about the UK turning into such sad acts?
