Leon and Leona both X-mas number One

Christmas 2007 is now officially an X Factor double-bill after Leon Jackson topped the singles chart whilst 2006 X Factor winner Leona Lewis topped the album chart.

Leon’s single ‘When you Believe’ sold 276 000 copies, the highest weekly total for any track this year. This is despite numerous complaints that Leon’s win was due to problems with telephone lines, a claim ITV vigorously denied earlier this week. Our own poll gave Leon just a 10% approval rating with readers.

Leona Lewis’s album ‘Spirit’ has been the top seller for the last six weeks, and held off competition from Westlife and Michael Buble.

  1. Way to go, Leon!

Looking forward to his first album and in the unlikely event that the Powers That Be are reading this, please include that duet with Kylie.

Michael Bublé would be a bonus too ;-)

  2. Well done Leon and Leona!

I hope this shuts up all the people sayin its a fix – if it was a fix how come Leon sold more than anyone else??

I think Simon Cowell has had people posting on here saying Rhydian should of won to keep X Factor in the headlines!

  3. Jaimee,

    Christmas 2007 Leon 275,000.
    Christmas 2006 Leona 1,000,000
    Christmas 2005 Shayne 740,000

If what we have been told is correct Leon must have received at least 2-3 Million votes. Why then have so few bought the cd. It is not brain science to work out the answer.

I hve listened to a number of Radio Stations including the BBC who have played the cd. Everyone has been derogatory about Leon’s voice.

No winner of Pop Idol, Fame Academy or X Factor apart maybe from Michelle McManus has been so ridiculed.

I really feel sorry for Leon and his family. Yes he has a million pound contract but is that enough to stop the hurt if and when his career is ended.

  4. Well done Leon.
Rhydian’s fate was sealed when a) his version of “When you believe” was not a patch on Leon’s. A surprise, but a fact, and b) when we saw footage of what he was like at the beginning of the auditions with his fake tan and his big headed ways, that most of us had forgotton. I had voted for Rhydian on the night but counter balanced the vote with another one for Leon after seeing the above.

Leon – your version of When you Believe is brilliant

  6. Yeh I agree Jaimee. Like its going around that Rhydian was a sore loser but on the radio his parents said Rhydians not like that. It was a bit unfair on him I think.

  8. Have listened to leons’ single. Being honest,i do not know how people can enjoy the song. I find it difficult to.Not too professional, or should i say ‘polished’? Not great at all. I hope Rhydian releases a single very soon.

  9. Leon is STILL number one….and has the fourth biggest selling single of 2007!!!!!

  10. Atta boy! You can stack the facts up whichever way you want but the reality is Leon won; went to #1, stayed there and the single is still selling.

According to many sources, Rhydian snubbed the Final after-party; his parents hadn’t got the good grace to say anything to Leon’s mother after his win nor does he like Leon’s single so the Thunderbird lookalike ain’t so Christian after all.

Rhydian will do just fine in time; he will be a West End star; his CD will sell very well with the over-40’s and as Sharon so wickedly predicted, he will appear on Songs of Praise :-)

Being completely out-sung by Kathryn Jenkins exposed his Opera-lite voice and of the three Welsh warblers to hit the high notes this year, I would much prefer Paul Potts .. now there’s a man who sings from a very big heart and bless him, is as modest now as when he appeared on Britain’s Got Talent.

Powers-that-Be .. yes, Christmas is over but a duet with both Kylie and Michael BublĂ© please for Leon’s first album :-)

  11. David,

You are obviously not a researcher. Shayne sold 313,000 copies in one day going up to 740,000 in four days and then went on to sell over one million copies.
    Leona Lewis had 750,000 pre-orders.

The point of these statistics is that compared to the reality show winners who can sing like Will Young, Leona Lewis and Shayne Ward the initial sales for Leon were three times smaller. That should tell you something.

People are quite entitled to say that Leon is the winner but throughout the various media sources Rhydian is the one getting the positive response and Leon the negative. I believe that the majority of the radio stations reviewing his single gave it the thumbs down.

I did not vote for Rhydian and I am not sure that I will buy his cds but anyone who does not accept that he is an outstanding singer and is destined for an illustrious career will end up with egg on their faces.

On another blog there was a comment that Katherine Jenkins outsang Rhydian. Whoever said that obviously have no musical experience. The problem was that her voice was not suitable for “You raise me up” and it does not blend with Rhydian’s voice anyway. The panel all agreed that when he sang it solo on a previous show it was the best version they had ever heard.

Leon was the winner and has a One Million Pound contract. Good luck to him. Rhydian on the other hand has the professional interest. He is the one attract international interest. He is the one Simon Cowell and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber are fighting over.

Leon supporters can insult Rhydian but he is the one who will have the last laugh.

  12. Am sorry to say this but comments by UNBIASED are so vague and biased.Shame on you that you can’t even reveal your identity to support your so called Leon…Rather your hiding behind the name UNBIASED. .Numerous comments proves that evryone is eargerly awaiting Rhydian’s single. Leon just won cos of pub luck on failed voting lines, not that there’s any great proffessionalism in his singing. He’s even trying to be average to face the facts, and yes, the whole of Scots must have bought his CD to give him the figures for chrsitmas number one??? when they claimed about 2-3 million people voted for him??? Think again…

  13. and just to add to your not even UNBIASED comment, Rhydian snubbing out of the after party does not make him less christian..( i would not know what you think you know about being a christian frm your comments). Why dint he walk out of stage wen Leon was announced winner in the sight of the whole nation watching??? and you are picking on what people did not see back stage??? VAGUE VAGUE POINTLESS COMMENTS YOUR MAKING????? get over it, many people LOVED RHYDIAN…..

  17. May I add that not all of scotland bought leon single I didnt nobody in my family did, and I have a big family, nobody in my boyfriends family bought it, he also has a big family and neither my friends or my boyfriends friends bought it.I dont understand why people are still goin on about this, why dont people just wait and see what of com say in the investigation they are carrying out?!?!?!?!?!

  18. Dear David,

I do admire your attempts at humour. I am so saddened to say that you are wrong again. I got my figures from official sources. You obviously did not. I suggest you consult a dictionary to ascertain what research means.

Whatever you want to believe the initial cds of Shayne and Leona were far more successful than that of Leon.

In 2008 their cds are still selling. I have a feeling this time next year even you will have trouble remembering who Leon was.

Do take care and I am sure Lunmsy sends his love back to you.

    Comment by James — Wednesday, 9 January, 2008 @ 21:48

  19. Well, Kristy (17), your big family and friends and your boyfriends’ family only contribute to 0.00005% of the whole nations population so your numbers all put together even if you bough leon’s CD are significantly too small to contribute to the number CD’s bought for leon’s single.

    James, lunmsy is a lady.

    Comment by lunmsy — Tuesday, 15 January, 2008 @ 22:49

  20. Lunmsy,

I apologise for assuming you were male. The good thing is that we both agree totally about Leon and Rhydian.
