ITV: No irregularities with Leon’s Win

Filed under: 2007 Contestants, Leon, Rhydian

We’ve received many hundreds of comments here at X Factor Blog since Leon’s shock win last Saturday night. Many of these comments spoke of difficulties getting through on the voting lines - for both Leon and Rhydian.

ITV have now come out publicly to deny any irregularities in the voting.

“Phone lines were monitored through the night and there were no irregularities on the voting lines. Call levels for the final were very high and depending on phone operators some callers may have experienced an engaged tone or network busy message. A tiny number of mobile customers did experience problems getting through because of high call volumes but viewers can be reassured that this would absolutely not have affected the outcome of the show. As all numbers go through to the same lines and vote platform it is impossible for there to be any bias in favour of or against a particular contestant.”

An ITV insider also commented that Leon had been consistently the most voted-for throughout the series, topping five of the eight polls prior to the final.

Rhydian’s mother has also spoken out, telling fans “We are just asking the nation to let it go and move on. The competition is overstaying.”

Don’t forget there’s still time to vote for your favourite contestant of the whole series before our poll ends on Sunday evening!

  1. the final was favoured 2wards leon the duet with kylie the airtime he recieved after his version of the final song the horrible vt rhydian had shown about him even made me think whether i shud vote 4 rhydian it was that bad.if this wasnt enuf 2 sway the voters then the last throw of the dice was 2 sabotage the phone lines yes i tried 2 put my vote in but after 10 attempts i gave up.

    Comment by dave white — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 11:38

  2. I am sorry ITV but your statement just does not bear scrutiny. It does not explain why my partner managed a number of times to vote for Leon without any trouble and I was not able to get through once to vote for Rhydian. I live in the East of England and was not using a mobile phone. My voting difficulty seems to be echoed by thousands throughout the country who tried to vote for Rhydian.

Further your claim that Leon won by 10% when a short time earlier we were told on national television that there was just 1% between the top two does not seem mathematically possible. That may be true of course if no one was able to vote for Rhydian. It is no defence to say that Leon topped five of the eight polls. Rhydian could have and should have topped the ninth.

I think ITV should seriously think of finishing the X Factor. Only Rhydian, Nikki and Beverley were quality singers and only Rhydian had the X Factor. There just is not enough talent left out there to have a final with twelve contestants.

I agree with Rhydian’s mother that we should now move on but the ITV have tarnished their image.

    Comment by Peter — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 15:34

  3. Why not release all three versions of “When you believe” - that way we’ll sure find out who the public prefers!

    Comment by Pam — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 17:05

  4. Dave White…..you gave up far too easily. We had the same problems in Scotland but we kept trying…..all night. This is why Leon won the final and not Rhydian!!!!

    Comment by David — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 17:17

  5. I think we’ve just got to accept that the worst man won and get over it now! Rhydian will be the ultimate winner in the long run anyhow - if you don’t count the evil that is Simon Cowell, that is…..

    Comment by Louise Simons — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 21:19

  6. I still want to know how when they had equal phone capacity and both were constantly busy (as must be if people couldn’t get through, the margin could grow from 1% to 10% in such a short time.
In these circumstances they should have received exactly the same number of extra votes between the 1% and announcement and the final result.
This simply does not work out mathematically.

    Comment by Theresa — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 21:44

  7. Rhydian was by far the best contestant and i really hope that he releases an album, I would most certainly buy it.

Same Difference - they would be fantastic to perform for Uk in the Eurovision Contest.

Leon - sweet boy but I was not impressed with his singing ability, always seemed somewhat off key!

    Comment by Chris — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 21:56

  8. I agree with Pam (3)but the rumours are that Simon Cowell will not agree to this because he knows that Rhydian will sell considerably more cds than Leon.

I also agree with Louise (5) that Rhydian will be the ultimate winner.

This blog and the polls conducted all show the amount of support for Rhydian and the outrage that he did not win. In comparison the support for Leon pales into insignificance.

A significant amount of the comments in favour of Leon
have resorted to insulting either Rhydian or his supporters. I think that tells its own story.

Maybe in future there should be one blog for those that want to air their views in a constructive manner and those that want to rant and insult. I love the fact that this blog allows us to say what we think and have a debate.I respect the right of someone to disagree with me but please do it in an adult way.
Resorting to insults weakens the argument.

    Comment by P J — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 22:26

  9. People need to accept the fact that leon won and deserved it. Im sure if simon cowell rigged the votes, rhydian would have won. You could tell from the start that he wanted him to win.His comments about leon throughout the show were at times unfair.Leon won because the majority of the public voted for him-simple! Yes, Rhydian has a fantastic voice but so does leon,in a different way.Im sure both of them will have great careers.

    Comment by anna — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 23:03

  10. I hear that rhydian himself believes the show was rigged. What a bad loser. He was arrogant right from the start and thought the win was in the bag.The snobby freak has just been brought back down to earth with a huge thud. There are better opera singers than him anyway-aplenty. Leon is the one with the bright future ahead of him.Rhydian has done himself no favours mouthing off like a spoilt brat,in fact it will only give people more reason not to support his career.

    Comment by katrina — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 23:30

  11. People - get over it! It’s a win-win situation for both as Rhydian will go to the West End and warble away there.

I like opera but Rhydian is only ‘Opera Lite’ as sadly demonstrated during his duet with Kathryn Jenkins and besides, one reality opera singer from Wales (Paul Potts) is quite enough for 2007.

I much preferred Rhydian when he had ‘attitude’ in the beginning; then he morphed into a pale and uninteresting waxwork of his early days. Whether the ‘attitude’ was an act or he was told to downplay for the live shows, who knows.. or to be more truthful as this is now last week’s new, really cares?

Loved Leon from his first audition and unlike the majority of contestants, he has really progressed every week from the nervous, camera-shy performer in the first shows to giving it large with Kylie. He was a joy to follow.

And what a lot of viewers are forgetting - he does not have the advantage of lots of other X Factor finalists experience; Leona ‘Yodelling’ Lewis; Niki; Rhydian; Same Difference .. all of them had some form of stage school/recording/reality show history - Leon had none.

So cut him some slack and get on with life. Oh and Merry Christmas :-)

    Comment by UNBIASED — Thursday, 20 December, 2007 @ 23:38

  12. O well, one thing ITV have to realise is the fact that Rhydians fans, not only in Wales but even London are not happy that their votes were not registered because of constantly engaged lines. Yes it could be because of the high call volumes, but how can you explain a family trying more than 50 times within the space of an Hour and not getting through? If they did that once and gave up, then they did not try enough.
You can’t just wake up on sunday morning and think to yourself that Leon won the X factor! That Does not sound right, and you can see the reaction from the public even all over England (Xcept Scotland of course).
And for the people of scotland that feel its jealousy that is arousing people to air their views about Leon, I don’t think honestly that he has a voice and charisma to die for. i could barely make out the tunings of most of his performances let alone vote for him. He just got that place by chance and Luck..Period.

    Comment by lunmsy — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 12:12

  13. Was it just my imagination or did Simon Cowell seem to be saying see ya to Rhydian immediately after he’d finished ‘when you believe’when he said something like …..if we don’t get to hear you perform again!
Not saying the show was rigged cos i don’t think it was but must be a better way of judging the final. Anyway hope Rhydian goes on to a long and successful career in music…he deserves to.

    Comment by Judy Heywood — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 13:03

  14. If leon kept getting the most votes and topping polls, how come on your own link page rhydian had 80 per cent of the vote? you are contradicting yourself on your own site.

    Comment by Lesley — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 13:23

  15. Rhydian was not the best leon was always on top from the begining and after about 100 atempts I could not vote for leon cause there were so many people calling for him. Leave him alone to enjoy his win this is supposed to be the time for good will to ALL men not sour grapes.

    Comment by Gaynor Reis — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 14:37

  16. Leon won fair and square! We voted for him, and yes we also had trouble getting through at first. What a lot of old sour grapes!! If Leon was so bad, then how come he was never in the bottom two each week. I am SO glad he won, and yes we have bought the single. His mum must be so proud, I know I would be….

    Comment by julie — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 16:24

  17. How could it be a fix? Statements says that Leon was Quote ‘

An ITV insider also commented that Leon had been consistently the most voted-for throughout the series, topping five of the eight polls prior to the final.

I believe that this means he was top of the votes each week and not Rhydian.

    Comment by Angela — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 18:47

  18. Yes, Rhydian is a talented singer. But this is X Factor - a pop contest looking for the popular vote. Who said Madonna, Britney Spears, Girls Aloud or the Spice Girls were the greatest singers. But they have something that attracts the popular vote. A likeability and a bit of talent. That is where Leon won. People were attracted to a shy, humble young lad with wonderful family values who grew as each show went on. He has a broad appeal to all ages and that is why he is such a worthy winner of a “pop” contest. He has the X Factor. Rhydian will probably sit back in a year and be delighted that he didnt win as he will now have the publicity, but also the freedom, to manage his own career. Good luck to them both

    Comment by geordikid — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 21:34

  19. Yes people …i also believe that “Wee Leon” was top of the voting poles each week. The final was not as close as we were told.I think the true winner was Leon and the future will support this statement.I recognise that Rhydian fans were upset about their man coming second but there had to be a winner.Leon has support from all over the UK and not just Scotland.

    Comment by Tracey — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 21:44

  20. We tried using our landline to vote for Rydian 26 times in 15 minutes and it was engaged everytime . the only way we could get through was by mobile.
    Quite bizarre and very irregular.
Our faith in the X factor has been sorely tested this year and I am not sure we will watch it next year even if it is allowed to continue!! shame as there is no need to rig the results.

    Comment by David Mead — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 22:23

  21. i tried to vote for rhydain throughout the night, and only got through twice in the last hour.

However, i do think that rhydian has come out of this with a better and rosier future ahead of him. We’ll see who comes out of this with the better career in the next year, but i know who my money is on.

also, he has NOT complained about fixing of the XF. Nor has his family. This needs to be recognised.

    Comment by jenny — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 22:28

  22. leon deserved 2 win hes a star, hes cute, adorable hes gt the voice hes star quality basically he deserved 2 win.Leon was the best all the way from the beginin n face it people Rhydian is nt as good as Leon face the truth people Leon is better than Rhydian!!! If Leon was soo bad how cum he wernt in the bottom 2 any of the weeks basically he is better than Rhydian!!! I av bought Leon’s single i was there at the shop 4 wen it opened hes AMAZIN,Leon’s mum must be so proud of him i knw i wud be.

    Go Leon!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Comment by jodie wilson — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 22:32

  23. So leon won?
Why is it then that the papers are filled with Rhydian?
Heat magazine is running a 4 page interview with RHydian this week - the week after the final - surely this interview should be with Leon. Leon is not mentioned once. Why does almosts every journalist I read say what they are shocked at leon winning and think that Rhydian should have done. Why is everyone saying that Rhydian will go on to have a fantastic career because he is talented and that Leon will be a one album wonder (?) and disappear. Why does Rhydian constantly top all the polls?
Why didn’t he win? i just can’t understand it. he is superior in everyway to Leon: voice, charisma, charm, dignity, sex appeal - he has it all. Leon is fairly good at best. Time will tell. But I think I know who we will still be talking about in 5 years time!

    Comment by anna — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 22:34

  24. This Years Xfactor Has Been……..awful
like some one else said the only deacent contestants were rhydian, nikki, and bevely. it said that only a tiny number on mobiles were affected with the votes.
Wich may i add is a lie because me and my six friends tried to vote (rhydian) and we couldent get through
and a couple of doors down my friend had the same problem, so exactly hoe many is this small number of people because theres 8 that i know of. I Think Rhydian Should Have Won Personally. Leon And Raymond from last year sang the same songs and who was better have a listen and you’ll see what im on about.

    Comment by beth!! — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 22:44

  25. Leon was much the best of the 2 finalist rhydian was over confident I tried to vote all night for leon but couldnt get through I think its sore grapes by some Rhydian fans trying to spoil Leons success

    Comment by andrea — Friday, 21 December, 2007 @ 23:37

  26. after watching repeat of the final and watching rhydian nail every song im just thinking how did leon win?

    Comment by steve white — Saturday, 22 December, 2007 @ 02:05

  27. What a farce! This should have been a singing competition not a competition between England, Scotland and Wales. The hype regarding the three countries was disgraceful as people are going to vote for their country not for the best singer. I also could not get through to vote for Rhydian who was by far the best contestant throughout the competition. I wanted to vote for him as he was the best singer not because he was from Wales. I suspect many people voted for Leon because he was Scottish and the competition should not have been promoted as a contest between countries. Unforgiveable! By the way I am English so I am completely unbiased, but Leon, although loveable, sang off key at times and the released single was boring sung by him, but Rhydian’s version was completely different and professional and I would have bought this version. I am disgusted with the whole thing.

    Comment by Annette Davies — Saturday, 22 December, 2007 @ 11:35

  28. Obviously Rhydian should have won no explanations required. It would have been good if he could have released a single beofre christmas too , number of sales would have sorted the dispute of popularity contest!!! Did anyone see Leon on GMTV ouch !!! even the tone deaf were cringing.
    Pob bendith Rhyd

    Comment by Craig — Saturday, 22 December, 2007 @ 12:31

  29. Leon is bog standard. The stronger performer was without doubt Rhydian. Time will show.

But good luck to poor sob story Leon. He will need it.

Once all the hype ghas faded away, then so will he.

    Comment by Gerry Woodgate — Saturday, 22 December, 2007 @ 13:42

  30. Angela it does not matter what ITV say. Offcom have decided that there needs to be an inquiry.

Interestingly it is predicted that Leon’s single will reach between 250,000 - 300,000 sales including downloads to make the Christmas No. 1. Records show that Leona reached 1,000,000 and Shayne Ward 740,000. Will Young after winning Pop Idol in 2002 has the fastest ever selling single with 1,100,000 in the matter of days.

If reports are to be believed Leon received at least 2-3 million votes. They obviously have not put their money where the votes went. What supportive voters.

I have absolute no doubt that if Rhydian had won he would have at least equalled the amount sold by Shayne.

As I suspected the support for Leon as evidenced by this blog is no more than a lot of hot air. They are certainly not putting their hands in their pockets. Maybe the conspiracy theorists are correct !!!

    Comment by James — Saturday, 22 December, 2007 @ 14:25

  31. I think that the best man won! Leon was my favorite to win! i think he has a better voice than Micheal Buble and anyone who thinks that the X factor should stop becos it is a fix shows bad sportsman ship. Face it… the better singer and performer and the better looking decent singer won. Welsh supporters of Rhydian should give this protest up. Rhydian will get an album anyway !

    Comment by LEON LOVER — Saturday, 22 December, 2007 @ 15:26

  32. what i dont get is the fact that EVERYONE is complanining that they couldnt get through for Rhydian..well what about the fact that people couldnt get through for Leon either?!?!?!

i tried several times to get through but the lines were obviously busy as it is a FINAL!! theres no conspiracy its just that Leon is more suited for the charts than Rhydian will ever be - that combined with the fact that the Welsh are also just sore losers :D

    Comment by just me. — Sunday, 23 December, 2007 @ 19:26

  33. The whole thing was a farce - I didn’t support either finalist, but Leon clearly sang flat, and that makes the whole phone-vote issue irrelevant. The fact that people are prepared to vote for someone who sung off-key shows they don’t know anything about talent. Would one of you Leon-voters kindly tell me why you voted for someone who was so flat? Were you simpering so much over his looks, you idiots, that you didn’t bother listening to his crap singing? You’re an embarrassment.

    Comment by Erica Paige — Monday, 24 December, 2007 @ 00:32

  34. How silly! 2-3 million votes doesn’t mean 2-3 million people voted for Leon as you have to factor in multiple votes from same callers.

Well done, Leon - a #1 is a #1 and this continuing begrudgery sounds just more like sour grapes from Camp Rhydian.

In an interview this week, Louis Walsh revealed that Shayne Ward auditioned 3 times before he was put through; Rhydian, Leona, Niki and even Same Difference have all had some serious coaching/stage school training at one point so I say fair play to the little Scottish underdog .. I, for one, will definitely buy his first album particularly if it includes that duet with Kylie :-D

Rhydian’s album? Thank you but no, he is Opera Lite and I would much prefer Paul Potts.

    Comment by UNBIASED — Monday, 24 December, 2007 @ 00:44

  35. It really is time to move on in the Leon/Rhydian debate, there will never be any sort of agreement between those who are ‘fans’ of Leon and those who think the poor lad can’t sing! Time will tell on both of them. BTW as one of those who criticised the fact that Leon won can I just say that none of this is his fault - he entered a contest , worked really hard and won it - good on him, don’t blame him even if you don’t like his performances.

But what really needs debate is the show, dreadful format, relying on sob stories, biased judges more intent on squabling than the contestants. If there is to be any further X factor then model it on BBCs strictly come dancing, far more dignified, haven’t followed it just saw the final where two superb couples competed and either would have made a worthy winner. The judges were independent not ‘mentoring’ their own contestants, family and friends gave messages of support but none of the sob stories, poor me stuff.

Public - if you don’t like what happened demonstrate it by boycotting the show, if you must watch it then don’t vote, they are making a huge amount of money out of you.

    Comment by Margaret — Monday, 24 December, 2007 @ 09:31

  36. Rhydian is freaky looking, is not suited to pop and Leon is better looking. It’s a no brainer.

    Comment by Liz — Monday, 24 December, 2007 @ 10:02

  37. Margaret,

    Spot on.

Rhydian has no need to worry. He has Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Simon Cowell fighting over him.

    Comment by Peter — Monday, 24 December, 2007 @ 15:09

  38. Well done Leon.
Rhydian’s fate was sealed when a) his version of “When you believe” was not a patch on Leon’s. A surprise, but a fact, and b) when we saw footage of what he was like at the beginning of the auditions with his fake tan and his big headed ways, that most of us had forgotton. I had voted for Rhydian on the night but counter balanced the vote with another one for Leon after seeing the above.

Leon - your version of When you Believe is brilliant but I do also believe that Rhydian has a future in music but maybe he will be on a stage in the west end.

    Comment by Lorraine Day — Wednesday, 26 December, 2007 @ 12:14

  39. I cannot believe it, we have just flown back from Canada today, 27th December, we went on the 14th December so had no idea who won until I went on this website.

I really just cannot believe Leon beat Ryddian. i didn’t tape the programme unfortunately, is it being repeated anywhere for me to watch it?

    Comment by Golden girl — Thursday, 27 December, 2007 @ 20:50

  40. Unbiased,

I did not vote for Rhydian so I do not come from Camp Rhydian. I just think that Rhydian is an outstanding singer and anyone with a musical ear will know that Leon is not.

To say that someone is silly to point out that at least 2-3 million votes were cast for Leon and only 276,000 copies sold is infantile. If there were multiple votes for Leon maybe a system should be set up to ensure one person one vote. That would probably give a more realistic result.

Maybe Unbiased is correct only 276,000 voted for Leon but they registered multiple votes. What support !!!!

I agree with Margaret (23) the X Factor formula needs to be revised. The behaviour of the judges, particularly Louis and Sharon, was despicable. I suspect unless changes are made the viewing figures will decrease.

    Comment by James — Friday, 28 December, 2007 @ 11:50

  41. Dear James,

X Factor is not a singing contest. Simple as. It is an annual testament to the public’s fickle taste - who thinks who’s cute/hot/sad/cringeworthy etc and ran by powers-that-be intent on producing Xmas #1 fodder.

It is patronising to infer that us plebians can’t recognise the fact that Rhydian can sing. It’s been a serious waste of time and money if he can’t after his training. That’s not the issue. Hope were hopeless; Niki flattered to deceive with several high notes; Leon has been far from pitch-perfect. I repeat - that is not the issue.

The X-factor issue is popularity and Camp Rhydian are still throwing toys out of prams because he wasn’t that popular after all. Why did Andrew Lloyd Webber turn him down before? Why did the judges dislike him from the first audition? His arrogance and ‘I’m the best singer in the world’ factor, that’s why.

I was on holidays for the final decisions/first live shows and couldn’t believe it when I saw Rhydian had made it through.. I thought it would have been the Asian lad. I thought Leon was wooden with no stage presence whatsoever in the beginning while Rhydian entertained greatly with his Liberace-theme performances so I can say I was unbiased during the live shows.

BUT .. Leon grew in confidence, his personality shone through and what you saw was what you got. Rhydian had obviously toned his arrogance down but every performance was the same; technically brilliant but no soul. Soul is different from attitude and arrogance.

Leon wore his heart on his sleeve; Rhydian’s was well hidden under the sequins while others carried their hearts on banners with mawkish tales of not wanting to return to careers in asbestos; school dinners and cruise ships.

So I think Leon was a worthy winner; not only has he won but he was never arrogant enough to think it was in the bag and the British (and *coughs* Scottish) public love the underdog.

Now, back to your points - what IS infantile and simplistic is to suggest that 2-3 million votes should equate to 2-3 million sales. The-single-is-still-selling so who knows what the final figure will be plus it is a dreadful song choice! Still, I had to search four shops last week before I could find it.. go figure. The reason I bought it is for the ‘Home’ track which is far better than the Westlife pap version.

I may have bought the single but I had no intention of voting and lining ITV and Co’s pockets :-) Whether Leon won or not, I would still have followed his career with interest and when the likes of Celine Dion and Michael Bublé have both privately and publicly said he has so much potential, then he will be singing his big heart out for a long time.

Had Rhydian won, *shrugs* he’s not my cup of tea but I wish him well in the West End; in his over-40’s CD market and as Sharon so wickedly put it, on Songs of Praise:-D Oh and he’ll be wheeled out with Charlotte Church to warble at the start of Welsh rugby games.

Regarding the X-Factor format ..it’s the closest thing the British public have to watching people put in the village stocks. You can huff and puff as much as you like about Never Watching Again .. EVER..; Get Rid of - Judge, (I’d prefer if they got rid of Brian Friedman and his ridiculous choreography) and one vote per viewer .. jawohl .. but you know come next September, y’all be gathered round your TV sets in bestest mop caps, clicking away on the knitting needles with a pile of rotting veg at hand to pelt at the screen :-)

Happy New Year everyone, see you in September!

  42. Hi Golden Girl

You really would not want to watch it —– it has taken us 2 weeks to chill out! You were in the best place!

Watch U tube and the best of Rhydian !

  43. Dear Unbiased,

Your comments were a wonderful antidote to a hard day at work. I needed a good laugh although I nearly fell asleep as you went on forever.

    Four points in response:-

    (1) X factor was a singing competition until Leon won. Examples: 2006 - Leona and 2005 - Shayne.

    (2) Rhydian did not get through to the finals of Joseph because he was not suitable for that part.

    (3) Shayne - 313,000 copies in one day going on to 740,000 in four days and finally selling over 1 million copies of his Christmas single. Leona - 750,000 pre-orders. Leon - 276,000 in four days.
    Case proven.

    (4) Viewing figures for X Factor 2008 will decrease significantly unless the format is changed.

    Happy New Year

  44. Unbiased,
Always giving unrealistic and vague vague comments. I wonder how much Leon’s fans paid you to defend him on this site. Leon has got Tonsolitis now, hoping he’ll recover from it. But you can see his condition was evidently caused by him overly straining his vocal chords to hold notes when singin. why put that so much effort to make your voice sound good??? Tell Me- Leona and Rhydian sing effortlessly from their bellies…???
Leon is not that professional or even a great singer cos this is meant to be a singing competition.

  45. mmm, leon won, get over it.

like comment 3> my partner voted multiple times for leon…

its people like your partner that spam the phone lines, each person should have 1 vote to make for equality, so your partner calling multiple times is more like the problem numnts!
